If the defendant is in jail, the court can serve documents to the jail where the defendant is being held. If the defendant is in the process of being released, there may not be enough time to have documents sent to the jail. If the jail receives the order after the defendant has been released, the jail will be able to transfer the documents to the appropriate law enforcement agency, who will serve them to the defendant.
