What is a mechanic’s lien?

A lien is a legal tool that is used to satisfy debts by attaching to property, the lien must be paid off before the property it is attached to can be sold. A mechanic’s lien is typically used by subcontractors who have provided work or services and have not been paid for their labor, in those cases the laborer may have an interest in the building or construction site that was worked on and would need to seek a judgment for a mechanic’s lien to protect their interest (the money owed). There are many types of liens; if a person owes you money for a reason other than construction you may still be able to be able to get a different type of lien. A list of liens is provided in Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 33, Chapter 7.
